In the center of the magical town of Papantla, a beautiful tour of murals celebrating the Totonaca culture and the heritage of their traditions will be waiting for you.
Full of magic and color, you can find many of the murals near the central park, but also in restaurants and stores that show the beauty of the original Totonaca people and the traditions that are celebrated until this date.
Artists
Among the best known artists is Jose Martinez or “Pepe Martinez”, creator of impressive large-scale paintings and murals that show the value of the roots, showing the rich customs full of color.
Works and murals
Among the most important works is “Abuela Totonaca”, a painting that pays homage to the grandparents who are the bearers of wisdom. The visible wrinkles symbolize the accumulation of experiences that the elderly have lived.
Several works pay homage to the Voladores de Papantla and their ritual, but one of the great works that stands out is the “Vuelo”, which represents the dance of the Voladores that deals with fertility for the earth. In vivid colors we appreciate all the indispensable elements to understand the culture of the region.
Other works that you can find among the streets and restaurants are “Los Herederos” which, according to Pepe Martinez, represents “what we were, are and will be”. Others like the representation of Totonaca gastronomy in some restaurants.
On your next visit to Papantla, you can’t miss the downtown streets in search of all the murals.
